The first public artwork to be commissioned by the City of Lancaster for the Art and Public Places Program, “Astral Challenger” by Shana Mabari, was unveiled to the public on May 2016. The 20-foot tall sculpture memorializes the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, and is located is at the intersection of Challenger Way and Avenue L, the former route used to haul space shuttles from Air Force Plant 42 to the Edwards Air Force Base.
